The story of the founding of Nu Deco Ensemble is something like a Bob Hope-Bing Crosby “Road” movie – perhaps “The Road to Singapore,” or “The Road to Miami.”

Jacomo Bairos and Sam Hyken are the co-founding artistic directors of Nu Deco Ensemble.  Hyken also serves as composer/arranger and CEO, and Bairos is the ensemble conductor.

Mr. Bairos grew up in Homestead, Florida and escaped to the Interlocken Arts Academy when Hurricane Andrew destroyed his home town.  Mr. Hyken grew up in the New York City area and was inspired by Wynton Marsalis to become a professional musician.  Jacomo was a tuba player, and Sam played trumpet.  They both attended the Juliiard School, but didn’t meet until they traveled halfway around the world to Singapore, where they became best friends.

Hyken met Michael Tilson Thomas and knew that he had to work with MTT at the New World Symphony in Miami Beach.  Bairos returned to Homestead on a regular basis to visit his family, but he also carved out time to visit his best friend Sam Hyken.

Gradually over time, Hyken and Bairos developed the concepts for Nu Deco Ensemble, and, with some help from the Knight Foundation, they were able to launch in 2014.

Nu Deco Ensemble is a virtuosic and eclectic chamber orchestra designed for the 21st century. Through exciting and adventurous classical music performances, Nu Deco Ensemble presents various styles of music, art, and media collaborations in both traditional and alternative venues.

Working in conjunction with local musicians, composers, DJs, dancers, visual and media artists, Nu Deco Ensemble creates a new hybrid of compelling musical and multi-media experiences. Blending masterful musicianship with a wide range of repertoire from classical to pop, Nu Deco Ensemble strives to be South Florida’s leader in genre-bending musical exploration.
