Pulitzer Prize Recipient Art Spiegelman
ART SPIELGELMAN (b. 1948) has almost single-handedly brought comic books out of the toy closet and onto the literature shelves. In 1992, he won the Pulitzer Prize for his masterful Holocaust narrative Maus— which portrayed Jews as mice and Nazis as cats. Maus II continued the remarkable story of his parents’ survival of the Nazi regime and their lives later in America.

The other night we watched the documentary film GI Jews: Jewish Americans in World War II on PBS. We jumped out of our chairs when we saw that artist Si Lewen (1919-2016) is one of the “talking heads.” Si Lewen is the subject of Pulitzer Prize-recipient Art Spiegelman’s book, which we discussed in this video interview during the 2016 Miami Book Fair.
