A New Spin Every Year

  Editor’s Note:  In 2006, noted art critic Elisa Turner wrote a profile of Debra and Dennis Scholl for ARTNews magazine, focusing on the Scholl’s unusual practice of allowing a different curator every year to arrange and hang artwork from the Scholl’s collection. The curated exhibition is on the display in the Scholl’s home for one full year, and then the process is repeated.  With permission of Elisa Turner and ARTNews magazine, ArtSpeak is pleased to present Turner’s article.

During the 1960s, along with Andy Warhol, Jasper Johns, and James Rosenquist among others, he became a leading figure in the new art movement.   Robert Rauschenberg – (1925-2008) An American painter and graphic artist that was part of the pop art movement.  He is will known for his “Combines” that used non-traditional items in his artwork. He studied at the acclaimed Black Mountain College in North Carolina.   Robert Longo – (b.1953) An American painter who skyrocketed to fame in the 1980s for his “Men in the Cities” series. His most famous paintings depict well-dressed men and women in contorted unnatural poses as if falling.   Simon Starling – (b. 1967) A British conceptual artist who won the Turner Prize in 2005. Since emerging from the Glasgow art scene in the early 1990s, Simon Starling has established himself as one of the leading artists of his generation, working in a wide variety of media (film, installation, photography) to interrogate the histories of art and design, scientific discoveries, and global economic and ecological issues, among other subjects.  http://www2.mcachicago.org/exhibition/simon-starling-metamorphology/   The Turner Prize – (est. 1984) The Turner Prize is a contemporary art award established by the Tate museum to celebrate new developments in contemporary art.
