XAVIER CORTADA’S science-art practice is oriented toward social engagement and the environment. For example, he created art installations in the Earth’s poles to generate awareness about global climate change. In 2007, as a National Science Foundation Antarctic Artists and Writer’s Program Fellow, Cortada used the moving ice sheet beneath the South Pole as an instrument to mark time; the art piece will be completed in 150,000 years. In 2008, he planted a green flag at the North Pole to reclaim it for nature and launch an eco-art reforestation effort.

Cortada was named as a collaborator with the McMurdo Dry Valleys LTER project in Antarctica. MCM LTER is an interdisciplinary study of the aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems in a cold desert region of Antarctica. In 1992 this area was selected as a study site within the National Science Foundation's Long-term Ecological Research (LTER) Program. This is the region of the continent where the same team of scientists collected the sediment that Cortada used during his Antarctic art residency in 2006-2007 to create his Antarctic Ice Paintings. Those works will be on display at the “Antarctic Ice Paintings: Global Coastlines & Underwater HOA” exhibition in Hibiscus Gallery at Pinecrest Gardens from Nov 8, 2018 - Jan 13, 2019. The Miami-Dade County Cultural Affairs Council has elected Xavier Cortada chairman of the 15-member volunteer advisory board. Mr. Cortada, a professional artist, will lead efforts by the board, appointed by the Miami-Dade County Commission, to develop cultural excellence, diversity and participation in the arts by strategically creating and promoting opportunities for artists and cultural organizations throughout Miami-Dade County.
A member of the council since 2005, Mr. Cortada is the first artist to assume the post of council chairman. He succeeds Adolfo Henriques, Vice Chairman of The Related Group, who served as council chairman from 2008 to 2018. "Xavier Cortada is the ideal leader to take the council and our arts community into next era of great accomplishments," said Mr. Henriques. "He is passionate, determined and persuasive about the power of the arts to change lives for the better."
